The MFA dedicated the long-awaited new wing yesterday, and opened it to members today. It drew a nice crowd, and well-deserved -- it's absolutely spectacular!

The Boit Family reunited for the first time in fifty years for the opening of the John Singer Sargent gallery. Sargent's beautiful and mysterious 'Daughters of Edward Darley Boit' (on the left) has always been the centerpiece of the MFA's fantastic collection of Sargent paintings, and now Sargent's portraits of the girls' parents, Ned and Isa (Edward Darley Boit and Louisa Cushing Boit) - look on from the right. The painting of Ned is on loan for the occasion.

I loved this room - the paintings are hung densely a la the Paris Salon, and milk-white sculptures stand out next to the rich red walls. I saw this lovely lady, casually wielding a knife, noticed that it's a sculpture of Medea, and said 'oh, ok, now it makes sense'.
