The Local bystander

2009.10.29

A few days back, I went out with my photographer friends to shoot around downtown Tampa in the evening, they say (don't ask who) it's always good to hang around in a group rather than wandering alone. So, there were about 15-20 people around this area with their fancy and not-so-fancy cameras. I was also one of them and as I was looking around for some interesting subject I saw this man approaching. Immediately I looked around for my bag and drew it closer to me (now I hate myself for that). Once I felt safe enough I started looking at this person through my camera lens pretending to take pictures while all this while I was actually looking at what he was doing. It was actually very funny, although he looked like one of the 'not so provileged' people, he was absolutely not awed by all the photographers and their fancy equipment. He proudly took this radio out from his pocket and listened to something all the time we were there. Now while I was uploading this picture I felt that he could actually have been a cop in disguise and that could be his walkie-talkie. He might be giving out instructions to other people to keep a close watch on the crazy people with all the cameras and doing crazy things when they should be back home having dinner. On the other hand they are hanging around in a silly little place, some are sitting down on the dusty floor or even lying on the ground and some even jumping to get what, just a sunset shot?

revenant Aha, counter-transference on a photographic plane... Fascinating snippet of a Florida photographer's life. I wonder which one of your alternative explanations is the truth.
BTW, you instantly made yourself far more appealling by owning up to the bag-check/guilt response. Few of us have your scruples or integrity!

lookagain Haha....love the shots and your story!! You really caught some interesting poses and now you make me wonder if he was an undercover cop. Great that you got the shots.....when I see an interesting-looking stranger I want to shoot I'm either hesitant to point the camera at them....or I do it so quickly and surreptitiously the shot doesn't turn out.

Ryana Haha, or do this : He has dreamed for years to be a famous model and saw his chances here. Not knowing what to do he took that small radio and turned around so that you could admire and photograph him at all sides ... ;o)
Great post Piyalli!!
