„Míg az átmeneti társadalmak hajlamosak a közelmúlt szimbólumaitól gyorsan megszabadulni, felmerül a kérdés, hogy mindent el kellene-e feledni. Bizonyos szimbólumok és tárgyak mélyen beleivódtak kollektív tudatalattinkba, csak azt nem tudjuk, mit kezdjünk velük, hogyan élesszük fel őket, és örökítsük át értékeiket, hogy a közelmúltunkról való számadássá, valamint saját és globális populáris kultúránk részévé váljanak. A Budapest központjában álló Corvin áruházat minden budapesti ismeri, többé-kevésbé a múltját is, de keveseket érdekel az, hogyan illik ez a város jelenébe és jövőjébe.
Az alumíniumfüggöny a régi, csapdába ejtett homlokzat takarásául szolgál, egyfajta vászonként a felületére rögzített hirdetőtábláknak és (fény)reklámoknak. Csapdába ejtette a múltat, de a jelenben senyved. Ki tudja, igazából melyik időhöz tartozik, és mikor illik majd bele Budapest kollektív lelkiismeretébe.
A projekt célja, hogy megpróbálja átalakítani a façade-ot, felhasználni vizuális elemeit, hogy új formát alkosson, és kifejezze értékét és egyediségét. Ha egyre többen úgy tekintünk majd a homlokzatra, mint Budapest nélkülözhetetlen részére, talán egyszer az eredeti homlokzat is meg fog jelenni. Talán a társadalom mindkét történelmi réteget elfogadja és tisztelettel övezi.
A mostani homlokzat Batka István eredeti façade-jának újraformált változataként jelent meg 1966-ban, de talán most jött el annak az ideje, hogy azt új életre keltsük, szimbolikusan még inkább, felhasználva esztétikáját poszterekre, csomagolási tervekre, printekre, és még sok minden másra. A homlokzat így érhetné el maximális potenciáljának kihasználását márkává válva, márkát teremtve."
Goran Radovanović
Goran Radovanović 1985-ben született Breźicében, Szlovéniában. Kétéves korától Belgrádban élt, majd 2004-ben beiratkozott az újvidéki Művészeti Egyetem média tanszékére. A gyermekkorától jelen levő, a képregények iránti, valamint a később kialakult, a szocialista építészetre irányuló érdeklődése (ez az építészeti stílus jellemezte egyébként a városrészt, ahol a művész felnőtt) nagy hatással volt esztétikájára és grafikus kifejezésmódjára. Későbbi együttműködése kísérleti elektronikus zenészekkel a kép és hang közötti viszony kísérleti videókban történő vizsgálatára sarkallta. Budapestre a stuttgarti Akademie Solitude, a József Attila Kör és az ACAX | Nemzetközi Kortárs Képzőművészeti Iroda együttműködésében megvalósuló Opening the Closed Shops műteremprogram vendégeként érkezett.
Two in one
Goran Radovanović's videoinstallation consists of three micro narrations all connected to the history of the building, illustrating significant moments in Corvin history, the first escalator, the first city square with street lights and the first moving commercial, that are now usual thing for every big department store. They are hidden under the facade, and you have to dig or make a hole to come to those forgotten stories.
„While post transitioning societies tend to rush with erasing symbols that relate them to their most recent history (on purpose or inadvertently), the question imposes should everything be forgotten, some symbols and objects are burned deeply in our collective unconscious, but we don't know what to do with them how to reanimate them and reaffirm their values, in order for them to become the statement about our recent history and also incorporate them in the wasp body of our own and global popular culture. Corvin department sore in the center of Budapest is an example of what is close but far away, every citizen of Budapest is familiar with this building, and more or less with it's past, but very few seek for the answer how can it fit in the present and future of the city.
The aluminum curtain is serving as an envelope for the old facade trapped beneath it, and also as a canvas for billboards and advertisements that are pasted on its surface. So between these two purposes it has very little space to "express itself" as a vital part Budapest identity. It has trapped the past and lies under the present, so where is it, what time does it belong to, or better to ask, what time in Budapest's collective conscience does it fit, past present or future?
The goal of the project is to try to transform the facade, to use it's visual elements in creating new forms and also to express it's value and uniqueness, if more people start looking at the facade as integral part of the Budapest, maybe the will to preserve this facade as an landmark and to protect it by law like it's very close "friend" the original façade will appear too, maybe society will gain the awareness of both layers of the history, and start respecting them equally.
As the façade was once presented as a redesign of the facade of Isvan Batka back in 1966, maybe now it is time to reanimate it by redesigning and transforming it again, even symbolically, using it's aesthetics for posters, package designs, prints, interior and much more. It is a way for a façade to achieve its maximum potential to become a brand itself."

Goran Radovanović was born in Brežice (Slovenia) in 1985, two years later moves to Belgrade with family where he finished elementary and secondary school, enrolled to University of Arts in Novi Sad in 2004, to new media department. Took part in several group exhibitions, and workshops concerning video and illustration. Interest in comic books, which was present from the earliest age and socialistic architecture (which is dominant in residential area where the artist grew up) have influenced his esthetics and graphic expression. Collaboration with experimental electronic musicians got him interested in experimental video, and relation between sound and image, not as a standard concept of DJ VJ act but as a new esthetic form. Drawing which is the basic element for visual and conceptual experimentation is present in his photos videos and animations. Proponent of recycling and ecological awareness (which is on very low level in his surroundings), and is interested in concept of ecological cities. Interested in experimenting with outdoor graphics. He's a guest in Budapest of residential art program Opening the Closed Shops, in cooperation with the Akademie Solitude, Stuttgart, the ACAX | Agency for Contemporary Art Exchange and the Attila József Circle.
