Bill and Tara On The Road To Kansas

2011.09.18
pixel
Travelling along State Route 2, we stopped near the top of Stevens Pass in the Cascade Mountains to visit an interpretive center concerning the Iron Goat Trail. The trail follows the old roadbed of the Great Northern Railway. Today the trail is used by hikers and bicyclists... Gorgeous country.

Stopped in the old railroad town of Skykomish. The BNSF Railroad and the Washington Department of Ecology are working jointly on a ten year cleanup of the entire town. The railroad, over more than 100 years, had left the entire town polluted with oil and heavy metals. One day soon it will become a real tourist mecca...today it is still pretty rough.

Tara taking a picture of the old Skykomish Hotel...built in 1905. The cleanup actually moved the hotel...cleaned the dirt, etc. that the hotel sits on and moved the hotel back. Next, the hotel needs restoration bad! :)

Stopped along the roadside by a pool left by the Skykomish River.

These are the biggest pine needles I've ever seen.

We're through the Cascades now and entering the wide open spaces (farmland) of Eastern Washington.

Another stop to stretch and walk Mandy. We just came up the road you see here.

Don't have much time to tell you about this but we are driving northeast along one edge of a coulee (a huge riverbed cut by massive flows of water from melting ice flows from previous iceages).
pixel
This is known as Dry Falls. Formed by iceage floods. The cliffs are between 300 and 400 feet tall. Imagine a deluge of water 300 feet high cascading over these falls.
pixel
Grand Coulee Dam. The town surrounding it is called Electric City. Go figure:)

Powerlines taking electricity away from the Grand Coulee Dam. After this picture we ran out of daylight completely.

Day 1, Saturday, September 17th, 2011

Today we drove 312 miles. We stopped at everything along the way. Maybe tomorrow we'll make 400 miles:)

The pictures above were all taken as we crossed the state of Washington from west to east. They are a wide assortment...just to give you a flavor of what we saw as we went whizzing by.

For those of you who don't know, we are making this trip via our Toyota...not the motorhome. Our range in the motorhome is only about 200 miles per day...we'd be on the road forever in the motorhome to get to and from Kansas;-)

We have just overnighted at Airway Heights right next to the airport in Spokane, Washington.

neiwil Here we go again! marvelous......not using the Motorhome ? a bit cramped in the Toyota, frying eggs on the engine block and were does the 42" Plasma go??

Thanks for the heads up on this, looking forward to 'our ' trip. Photos from your doorstep (so to speak) are great, and the roads look empty again... could this be a reflection on your driving Bill ? :-) Happy Trails....
