Still in Montana we took an hour or two to visit the Little Bighorn National Battlefield Memorial. On June 25, 1876 General George Custer attacked a very large Sioux village on the banks of the Little Bighorn River. To make a very long story short Custer's Seventh Cavalry was defeated by a superior Indian counterattack. This photo shows markers where some of Custer's men fell on Last Stand Hill. It also shows the Little Bighorn National Cemetery and the Park museum and visitors' center.

In the early 1990s, the Native American decendents of the Indians who fought Custer's Seventh Cavalry erected a beautiful memorial honoring the tribes that participated in the battle and the Indian warriors who were killed. The iron artwork here is just a part of the overall memorial.

Tuesday, September 20, 2011.
We drove 320 miles today from Billings, Montana through Wyoming to Rapid City, South Dakota.
Two highlights of the day:
1. The Little Bighorn National Memorial.
2. Visiting and staying overnight with a close family friend by the name of Rosie in her home in Rapid City.
It was another excellent day.
Tomorrow we'll be heading east across the state of South Dakota...we've got a couple of places in mind to stop enroute for more pictures.
See you then.

'Little Big Horn', now that's a place I would like to visit.Saw a great programme about the excavation they were allowed to do some years ago after a huge fire on the site.It gave a whole new insight into the battle and how much of a hole Custer had gotten himself into..Great photos, huge skies! (may be asking to borrow some backgrounds..)"are we there yet?"
