OK, Mandy is ready to hit the road again. She loves travelling in the car in her kennel. We stop often to give her an opportunity to see the sights and take care of business;-)

We've found old county courthouses to be real charmers in Kansas. This is the Franklin County Courthouse in Ottawa, Kansas. Date: 1893.

A little later in the afternoon we stopped in Emporia, Kansas to visit the William Allen White (1868-1944) house...a National Historic site since 1976. White was a renowned American newspaper editor, politician, author, and leader of the Progressive movement. Three presidents of the United States visited him here at "Red Rocks". Now, I have another biography to look up and check out of the library when we get home.

A side view of Red Rocks. We visited here on a Wednesday...it is only open Thursdays through Sundays. Seems like that happens a lot to us:)

Sidewalks outside Red Rocks were original 1890-1900 slabs of local stone. Not sure if limestone or sandstone but they are very picturesque.

Heading west again. The skies were spectacular and scenery superb in a Kansas sort of way.

Wednesday, October 12th, 2011.
We departed our daughter May's house in Lenexa, Kansas after a relaxing five day stay. We are now stepping off on the beginning of our final leg of our five week motor trip. The 2000 mile trip home will take us through Kansas, Colorado, Utah, Idaho, Oregon and Washington.
We drove 225 miles today and did a bit of sight seeing in Ottawa and Emporia, Kansas before overnighting in a Days Inn in Hutchinson, Kansas. We saw a lot of spectacular scenery in Kansas today that simplly could not be captured with the camera...vast panoramas. Thousands of years ago this part of the country was at the bottom of a large, shallow sea. Our route today followed a big piece of the old Santa Fe Trail used extensively by wagon trains going cross country to the old Southwest in what today is New Mexico.
