Cripple Creek, Colorado. Around on the "back side" (west side) of Pike's Peak. Gold was discovered here in 1890 and things went wild!

Today the town of Cripple Creek has gone from 1890s boom town to almost ghost town in the 1960s/70s and back to boom town once again. Casinos, tourism and a reopening of industrial scale gold mining has returned the town to full occupancy and prosperity.

A tourist gold mine...but a fun one. Here you can descend 1000 feet in an old gold mine shaft elevator and above ground walk around looking at tons of old 1900 vintage mining machinery and artifacts.

This is a must read...the Cripple Creek and Victor Mining district has produced more gold then the California and Alaska gold rushes combined! And we didn't know that either:)

Here's a glimpse of the modern Cresson Surface Gold Mine...lots and lots of dirt and rock being worked here! As a matter of scale, those two things moving up and down on the 45 degree slope above the buildings are two very large track laying bull dozers.

We did a quick drive through of Manitou Springs. This is a famous tourist destination filled with art galleries and shops of all kinds. We aren't shoppers so we drove in one end and out the other. The building here is a huge, old hotel in the middle of town.

Arrived at the Garden of the Gods to see its famous red rocks. We also saw a lot of people doing funny (silly?) things.

More rock in the park. Rock climbers are allowed to scale the many formations here. We saw a few climbers doing their thing but couldn't stop at the right place to get a picture of them.

As our last stop of the day we visited the Manitou Cliff Dwelling Museum...there's a fascinating story behind these cliff dwellings and if you are interested copy-paste this website address into your browser and check it out: http://www.cliffdwellingsmuseum.com/history.htm

Saturday, October 15th, 2011.
Today was our day to drive around the Pike's Peak and Colorado Springs area...and drive we did.
Here's a short list of our destinations: the Cripple Creek and Victor gold mining district, Manitou Springs, Garden of the Gods and the Manitou Cliff Dwellings.
Between Tara and I, we took over 700 pictures. What you see above is only a quick glimpse of what we saw.
Sunday our plans are far less ambitious with a probable short drive to the historic and gorgeous Colorado Springs Broadmoor Hotel and to go out to dinner with a dear family relative.
