The Print Is The Thing

2008.06.09
my first evah signed print!

office warming gift for the only person in Boulder who loves when it rains...

my latest trip to 'Napa' and 'San Fran'... i'm left-handed, consider the penmanship just plain stylish!

on my mantel, with a wonderful book of photos (that's how you display your photos!) from Gregory Colbert 'Ashes and snow'. notice the signature on my painting -- guess i didn't paint that one! ;)

a coaster. um, a dusty, wine marked coaster! i'm such a bachelor... not, Martha Stewart...

entitled 'Coasters on the Console -- if you are female, hawt, and single, place your wine glass here'. like i said, my captioning is a work in progress...

I've talked about this on my bloggy before. For me, a great shot is kinda nice here on photoblog, but, you will learn if it's a really great shot only when you've printed it out!

Print media. Captioning. I'm sure people studying photography (which I hope to do soon part-time) take entire credit classes on these subjects!

Anyhoo.

My first paid-for-print that was signed was 8.5 x 11" of my first and only front-page, was by special request, for Lindy, who inspires all of us. I wish I had taken a picture of it! But, thankfully Lindy just did!

These are the follow-on print-from-home. The first was a gift, as an office-warming present for a friend who loves it when it rains... which I don't -- bad for training!

The remainder are in my home. I'm not concerned at all about the cost of home printing, it's just running through cartridges constantly that I want to avoid.

So, I've decided to keep my home printing limited to 'draft' eyeballing of something I want to pay to have printed professionally, and, '4x6'or '5x7' with a border...

I got these 'frames' from Target. They are clear plastic in front, and then have a magnetic backing. The idea is that you can easily display, AND, swap out your latest shots. I use the black mats as frames on my mantel, and the red mats as coasters on my console behind me couch... I know, call me Martha Stewart -- who knew?

Signing, captioning, and a watermark, are aspirational journeys. So, this also documents my first cut!

On an interesting note, my father who is an accomplished artist who has had showings, sales, and commissions, always signed our last name as his watermark on his sculpture. It made me happy when I realized I had chosen to do the same... the only difference is that he uses a capital 'B', and I use a lower case 'b' -- which again, seems entirely appropriate...

I owe my father everything for inspiring me, and my sisters, in the arts. He has always done his own thing, never worried about exploring his artsy side, and I'm proud of him for it. Although I can't draw worth beans, I'm glad that I got his 'eye', and can at least express myself through photography...

Bold Out!

p.s. 13 days to Ironman... I'm going to turn into a pumpkin soon...

DancingDolphin I agree with you about printing shots.... I always just have 4 x 6's printed, lot's & lot's of them, and keep them in books. Then after our Greece trip I enlarged 4 of my favorites... they are not nearly as impressive printed as they are on the computer screen!?!?!
