Finding prices quickly rising above $1.70 the further north the Herald goes, it's not until calling Marla, about 100 kilometres south of the border with the Northern Territory, that the $2 mark is broken.

Station owners are quick to send the Herald onward to a variety of outback stations in the Territory's remote north.

The Barkly Homestead, 210 kilometres east of Tennant Creek, is often referenced as the most expensive.

However the man who answers the phone at Barkly, who sell their petrol for a touch over $2.25, says they are not the most expensive petrol station in Australia.

Tucked away in the Katherine River bed, the springs pump from deep within the earth at a mild temperature.
Katherine Hot Springs shallow pool near source of water & footbridge

The terminology "hot springs" is probably stretching the truth a bit. "Tepid" would probably fit the bill better. Averaging at a lovely temperature of 32C it makes the springs very enjoyable during the cooler dry season months.

Powered by Photoblog.com

The lake water is now 1.5 meters below it's normal level, reveling large areas of dry sandy lake bottom.
Lake Alexandrina is slowly dying due to the lack of water that normally comes down the River Murray. There has been reduced flows for the last 5 year due to drought (10 years) and over irrigation in the upper reaches of the River Murray.

Powered by Photoblog.com
