My husband and I had gone out to Elkhorn Slough for a walk and see if we could find some shore birds to photograph, but the tide was low and out so far that we were not really able to get much. So we headed to Moss Landing for some lunch and as we turned in to the harbor area we looked over and saw four otters just napping and playing close to shore. Here are just a few of the many shots taken this afternoon. It turned out to be a great day, photographically speaking ;-)

[Note: Too many awesome pictures on Sunday, so started them early on this page. They begin after the picture of Francesco at the beach.] MALTA! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Malta A lovely day at the beach. The first half of the day was spent buying necessities, as my luggage had disappeared somewhere between Catania and Luqa. The second half, however, was spent enjoying the golden sands and crystal waters of Ghajn Tuffieha Bay, along with Francesco's excellent company. We took the bus to Golden Bay, but Francesco said he preferred the next bay over. I'm glad we went there instead. More room, fewer people. And we got to walk past the wall snails! Francesco had his mask and snorkel with him, so he was able to go on jellyfish lookout as we paddled around for 25 min. or so. SO much easier to swim in the Mediterranean than the Pacific, let me tell you! (Go go extra salt!) He saw a large fish and handed me the mask, but it was gone by the time I looked. (*Note to self: get fins, mask, snorkle, and waterproof camera!) I did, however, get to see a large octopus settling onto a rock. It was looking right at us. Now I think I'll avoid the octopus salad that you can get everywhere in Napoli. I'd just feel too guilty... For a very pale-skinned, indoor person, I didn't burn very much at all. Indeed, after 4 days I think I have a nice base tan to start the summer, woohoo!

Bennett's Pier, first time out there since the big storms last week (the National Guard evacuated the bayside communities once the flooding got 4 ft deep or so). Nothing out here to really get irrecoverably damaged. The trees grow up, they fall over. The marsh grass breaks off, it grows back. The water comes up, it recedes. It was a little odd to see everything so clearly from so far away (can't normally see the water as you're coming down the road, but you can for now), but very serene, as usual.

Well, the weather cooperated today and unlike yesterday, I got the pictures of the tall ships as they came back into the bay after a tour. The Lady Washington (which played the "HMS Interceptor" on the original Pirates of the Caribbean movie) and the Hawaiian Chieftain have made their annual visit to Yaquina Bay. It was supposed to be decent weather today and the tall ships, the Lady Washington (which played the "HMS Interceptor" on the original Pirates of the Caribbean movie) and Hawaiian Chieftain were supposed to be arriving in Newport late in the morning. Unfortunately, the weather was gray and wet and the ships arrived well ahead of the published schedule, so I missed them. These are the only pictures I got that are really worth looking at at all, and I'm none too impressed with them.
