Asinara is an island, north-west of Sardinia, Italy. It was transformed into a National Park 10 years ago. It used to be an island-prison, not differently from Alcatraz. Except it is much bigger with a very strange shape. I chose to visit it this time by bike, but it's not flat and regular, so it was an hassle.

Cala Sant'Andrea. It's one of the most beautiful bay and beach, but it is absolutely forbidden to go there both from the inland and from the sea. Enlarge the photo to see all the colours.
|
The west coast of Asinara is rocky (vulcanic rocks) differently from th east coast which is granitic. It presents wonderful small bay, like this one, called Cala di Sgombro di Fuori.
|
Typical view of the west coast. the sealine is a little downward, that's the confused mind for biking uphill.

East coast. one of the few beaches you can go to (Cala Reale)

A view of the former jail. It seems like people left everything from one day to the next. It's quite impressive.

Most people think the name Asinara comes from the Italian name of donkey (=asino), because in the island live a particular kind of white donkey, an albino mutation of the typical Mediterranean donkey.
|
Actually, the name Asinara comes from the ancient latin name Sinuaria, which relates to the sinuous shape of the island as you can see in the map at the http://www.parcoasinara.org/?pag=maps site

the boat that takes you to Stintino, in mainland Sardinia. Tourists and wild boars (also named sirbons) along the dock
|
A happy family of wild boars domesticated by tourism. They get to the dock only when the boat arrives and they leave after eating tourists left overs or also entire sandwiches. There is an invasion of these animals that are threatening the sustainability of ecosystems of the island.

Un'isola stupenda, dove non ci sono mai stato. Foto di Alghero? Non ne trovo. Ci ho fatto il militare ad Alghero, a Fertilia
