shanghai saturday, a brief meander

2008.05.10
Sheets hanging out to dry on Xizang Nan Lu. Nearly every single building was covered by this bamboo-and-netting set-up, presumably for refurbishment of the building fronts.

The morning of May 5, during rush hour, the Number 842 bus burst into flames in Shanghai. Twelve people were injured, and three burned to death. A few days after the event, the police posted notices all over Shanghai trying to determine the identity of this man, one of the bus fire victims.

The cause of the fire appears to have been flammable materials carried on board by a passenger. It's not been made clear if this was done intentionally or not. For more, you can read here.

Lots of scaffolding.

My hotel was not far from the Shanghai Shoe Market. This sounds like a great thing, but when you go into the building the smell of shoe glue will knock your socks off. I stayed outside and watched this guy continue to try and stack shoeboxes on the back of his bike.

I'm always a sucker for a laundry photo.

More scaffolding. It's everywhere!

Off the beaten track and over to the Confucian Temple, the street to which is lined with vendors hawking just about everything. I like that everything that's been laid out here so far appears to be out of order or has an extra letter added (is that LVOE I see in the corner there?).

Like I said, they sell everything. Including extremely upset kittens.

Not. Happy.

Lucky kitties, and the occasional monkey.

Peeps.

Prom night dumpster baby.

Of course not. This baby has a momma who loves him/her.

Stinky Tofu. You smell it before you see it. And boy does it smell bad.

More laundry.

It rained almost the entire time I was in Shanghai. Except for the day I left. That day looked swell. No idea what this building is though -- rather prominent structure by the highway.

Saturday morning I moseyed out from the hotel on Xizang Nan Lu (practically in the Huangpu River, where the road pretty much ends in a shipping port) and walked northward until I had to find a taxi to the airport. Along the way I deviated off the main drag and ended up at the Shanghai Confucian Temple, the road to which served as a bustling market.
