Looming

2008.12.06

When driving across Oklahoma, I found the fields filled with symmetrical rows of windmills breathtaking. When Father showed me the Mayville ones I still thought they looked kind of cool, albeit out of place, like awkward skyscrapers sneaking into the landscape.

Now that these monstrosities are popping up around Highway S, along roads that I have driven umpteen million times, I am not sure how I feel about them. They seem random and scattered and ruin the horizon from Mother's house. I can't even describe how tall they are, how you come around a corner and there it is and you get a little scared and try to stop staring long enough to stay on the road.

They aren't even on yet.

I bet I know how the old farmers felt about silos...
