Fourth day of CNY

2008.02.10
pixel
Starting from the second day, people began going out to visit friends and relatives, taking with them gifts and ang pow for the children.
pixel
Visitors would be greeted with New year delicacies, such as cookies

and home-cooked dishes fresh from the kitchen.
pixel
Children will have the most fun & plenty of ang pow!

Have tried to practice some portrait shots as well. As I was using the external flash that can only be bounced in one direction, so all portrait shots will be in horizontal mode.

I don't know really which is the "better" way for portrait; glad if anyone can give some comments. Thank you.

chongyin Hi Chan Chiew,

No hard and fast rule on whether a portrait shot should be shot horizontal or vertical. My personal preference is vertical, taking the head and shoulders of the person and while a horizontal shot can achieve this, there is usually too much distractions at the sides of the main object. But as I mentioned, no hard and fast rule, up to your personal preference.

You mentioned the external flash can only be bounced in one direction. Here's a suggestion: Assuming you have exposed your shots for ambient lighting using ISO 400 and above, then technically, the flash light is for fill in only. That being the case, you may want to try a vertical shot, with your flash in bounce mode. Yes, the direction is away from the object, but nearby walls should be able to bounce back some light to the main object. Give it a try and see how it looks!
