Sintra and the fairytale castle

2007.04.11
Around 40 mins&#39 train from Lisbon is a quaint little hillside town...

where even the city hall looks like a tower out of Disney&#39s cartoons

Across the valley dividing the town was the royal palace

Stone guardians watched over the road to the town

IMHO, one of the charms of Portuguese towns in a word: hills.

I wonder what trees those are

Closer to the palace

The town and the Moorish fort on the hilltop

We decided to walk up the hill.

That decision gave us a few really good views.

But the Quinta de Regaleira was beckoning

In the mansion: a massive library. Or so we&#39re led to believe.

Calling the place a garden is an understatement.

Gardens don&#39t usually have caves, do they?

OK, this is more garden-like...

But I think a much better description would be: playground

My fascination with castles is beginning to show again

Especially when I can duck in and out of secret doorways

Up spiral staircases

And onto towers worthy of Rapunzel
