Vienna in May

2007.05.18
Just one tram ride away, the old city centre beckons

Get off the tram, look to your left, there&#39s the stately Parliament

A little further, Dr Karl Renner marks the corner of Rathauspark

Other important personages immortalised in the park

Maybe I should have come next year...

The Rathaus, from Rathauspark

Another of the many statues dotting the city

Further down the Ring, the façade of Vienna University

The iconic Stephansdom from afar

Heading into the city, a monument to the Jews massacred in WW2

Vienna at 8am on a Friday morning

Close up, Stephansdom looks rather more imposing

Check out the blue skies

The French embassy in Vienna. See story below.

Schwarzenbergplatz, a fountain with more than a hundred years of history to its name.

Karlskirche

I must admit I contributed quite a bit to that number

The Staatsoper

Sometimes the best things are right beneath your nose...

The story of the French embassy in Vienna goes thus: Around the time when the French were going to build this structure, plans were also tabled for a building to house the embassy in Istanbul. Somehow, the blueprints were accidentally switched, and Vienna ended up with a Turkish-style French embassy, while Istanbul got a Viennese-style one. Go figure. Thanks to Paul.
