Sg Buloh Wetlands Reserve

2007.09.22
Sg Buloh Besar leads out to Selat Tebrau, and you can see Johor Bahru pretty clearly.

The reserve is (was?) a mangrove swamp, and here you see the telltale signs of mangrove trees.

A lone egret

Reminds me very much of TS Eliot's 'wasteland'.

There are 'observation hides' scattered here and there for visitors to observe the flora and fauna. There wasn't much that I could observe, though.

Looking out towards Malaysia from the 18m-high 'Aerie'.

Looking inland towards Singapore. For once, the roles are reversed, although you can still see the telecoms tower in the distance and some sort of structure on the right.

We met loads and loads of monitor lizards, the first and last ones literally crossing our paths. This, though, deserves the title of 'Most Interesting Pose.'

An 'observation hide' from the outside

The whole time I was walking along the boardwalk, "Under the Boardwalk" kept playing and replaying in my head.

I think this was the most interesting thing I saw.

"Under the boardwalk..."

Qingxian recalled her teacher saying those leaves are used to 包豆腐. I however recall those leaves as being used to wrap pork and char koey teow.

The sign simply said, "Pepper".

Near the main entrance. I imagine it'd make quite a nice guesthouse. I for one wouldn't mind staying a few days.

One of my favorite trees - casuarinas!

After exiting the reserve, we took another 'nature trail' to get to the nearest bus stop. Quite a nice trail, really. According to our calculations, we walked a total of 9km that morning.

Barely 150 years ago, Singapore consisted of 13% swampland. That figure is now less than 0.5%.

I have to say, though, that the Kuala Sepetang experience was much, much, MUCH more authentic.
