Fort Canning Park

2008.01.26
Fort Canning was built over the keramat of a 13th-century sultan, on a strategic hill overlooking the river.

It is one of the city's 'green lungs'

Little trace remains above ground of the fort, but the bunkers, which were used in WWII, are open to the paying public.

The Park encompasses the Spice Garden, which commemorates the site as Singapore's first botanical gardens.

I think this is the picture many early 20th-century Europeans would call to mind at the mention of the Straits Settlements.

I forgot to mention that Stamford Raffles also built his villa on this hill. I suppose this is a re-creation.
