Entry to Cheder

2009.01.20

First the teacher put Yudi at ease, giving him a yoyo and another toy to play with.

Goody bags

Today Yudi made his entrance to cheder. Following his 3rd birthday and 1st haircut, a Jewish boy is wrapped in a talis / prayer shawl, and carried by his father to cheder -- the school where he will be learning. He sits on the lap of his "rebbi" / teacher and reads the alef-bais (Hebrew alphabet) from a holy book with honey over the letters, and then licks the honey, because learning Torah is as sweet as honey. His father acts as an agent for the Angel Michael, throwing him sweets and coins, which he distributes to the other boys, to be collected for charity. There are other customs as well. The little boys were so adorable and pure!
