5711 Kvarim Trip -- Dnepropetrovsk

2011.07.25
pixel
This trip starts with the previous post

The first actual stop was Dnepropetrovsk for morning prayers and breakfast. Unfortunately, (or fortunately) the synagogue was closed for remodeling, and we prayed in the courtyard. Our off timing continued, as we found out that the store would only open an hour after we left!

Big cities have modern revolving billboards

And tandem trolleys!

...but still have the old cobbled streets which I like

There are holes in the faces where you can stand and have your picture taken on the Coke advert bus stop

Everyone grabbed their bags, to brush their teeth in the synagogue's rest room. I grabbed my camera, of course!

I think Miriam is beautiful, even brushing her teeth! ;-)

Well, I was made fun of the whole way "Leah, there's a tank, take a pic... Leah, there's a statue, take a pic......" But they insisted I take a picture of this sign on the door of the synagogue, which says "Tefillin (phylacteries) in the courtyard." Many people who don't have time for the entire prayers may stop in for 5 minutes just to don the Tefillin and say the "Shema" prayer -- expressing the belief in One G-d, His Torah, and our relationship to them. Since the synagogue itself is closed, they want people to know to come to the courtyard to pray.

This is what the Tefillin look like. Ari is praying in his.

“You have a brain. It is in one world. Your heart is in another. And your hands often end up involved in something completely foreign to both of them. Three diverse machines.

“So you put on tefillin. First thing in the day, you connect your head, your heart and your hand with these leather cables -- all to work as one with one intent. And then when you go out to meet the world, all your actions find harmony in a single coordinated purpose…”

If you would like to read more about Tefillin, there is a very interesting site HERE.

The one thing that is open is the cafe, and Beila has a lovely breakfast of kosher ice cream after morning prayers.

Lena, Anya, and me. I really look fat in all the pics, with my money pouch under my shirt...

This is a model of the synagogue together with the nearing completion "Menorah Center." Everything needed in a Jewish community will be housed here.

kitegypsy Interesting photos, but I'd love to know: is there a female equivalent for connecting mind/heart/hands? If not, why not?

danrav I am so glad that you are back. I was in the final stages of Chossid deprivation and would have needed more than Tefillin to reintegrate my senses! A great set Leah. #8 is so sci-fi looking. That sculpture is classic!
The rail system is terrifying , but at least the revolving billboard will draw folks attention away from the impending doom of a derailment! That coke sign is something else! I love the guy walking by holdiing his head! I wonder if he hit it while peeking his head through the hole.
And yes - Miriam is absolutely beautiful. I have seen Beila previously in your posts! How is my friend the Rabbi??
