My table project

2008.04.19
This is what I started with, pieces of timber like this. And I used the saw to the right for cutting them up...

Our carpenting workshop at my workplace..

Glue and pressure...

It is gonna be a solid and rough terrace-table...

The workshop on my workplace is a mess, my colleagues are also building furnitures in the evenings...

We have some good machines here..

My table getting nicer and nicer...

This is how its going to be..

Ready for the finish...

After hours and hours and hours of brushing and polishing..

Ready for the oil...

Underneath first..

Then layors and layors and layors of oil on the top...

Looks beautiful, doesnt it?

It is a outside-table for my terrace, I want it to have a rough finish, not perfect, but it still looks quite nice...

The result, a nice breakfast-table for me and my family, suitable for the four of us....

Arrangement for the photographer...

Now we just have to buy some chairs (not rain forest wood of course)....

This can seems a bit odd, using this timber since I am against cutting down the rain forest! I actually hate the destroying of the big forests!
Therefore, this is the story:

A former colleague of mine baught a house just outside Bergen city 12 years back, he baught it from a old widow. The widows deseaced husband had been a sailor all his life, and over the years he did collect and braught home Merbau. Therefore, when my former colleague took over the house he discovered that the basement was full of Merbau, stored in some rooms.

The Merbautimber from the asian Ipil tree is beautiful, but not so common in Norway, in the north Pine and Spruce is used more for timber and for making furnitures.

Well, I helped my colleague a lot so he gave me some pieces of the timber. And I have had them stored for years on my workplace until some weeks ago. I was doing some cleaning up and thought " throw them in the trash or use them for something"?

I was thinking, these pieces of wood is old, probably been stored for 40-50 years, to bad to throw them and since I already have them I can use them for something good.
I have always been quite handy and clever making things, I started thinking, and started on my table project....

Took some shots when I was working, used my Sony Cybershot DSC-W100.
My Canon EOS 30D is on service, will not get it back for weeks.

Chris

PS: started today on my new project, the "shelf-project". Gonna make a big shelfconstruction for our livingroom, will use laminated Pinewood. Baught the timber today.
To be continued...................
