Day 118 A Picture Speaks a 1000 Words

2008.04.28

I have learned so many things from my students who have Autism. One of the most important things I have learned is that the students with special needs that I work with enjoy many of the same things students from general education do, such as playing with toys and games. Sometimes the challenge arises in communicating what we expect to our students through language, which is an area of difficulty for many children with Autism.

Picture icons, lamination, and velcro are amazing things and have opened up so many doors of communication for us by helping students understand what we need and expect from them and allowing them to commuicate what they need from us.

DancingDolphin Autism has undergone such dramatic changes in recent years in terms of "understanding" what it is. I have a friend with a 20 year old autistic daughter, that I have watched grow up. While she may never be able to live on her own, she is a straight A college student and a very interesting young woman. I imagine your job must be quite rewarding.
