@forevrdelayed - thanks for the great info and background. My father lived on a destroyer for an extended period of time during the Vietnam war and has talked about the same experience. You live and breathe her for years and she becomes home. As for the fate of the Forrestal and the Saratoga, it is still being debated. Both ships have been gutted for years, they are one step away from being sink-able in the bay. I am sure you are familiar with the routine, every tank, hold, drum, and machine is stripped from the ship. This was also done in order to get the ships into Newport, RI, as the water is not deep enough for them to travel loaded. You can see them here: http://tinyurl.com/yuuou5
