With Winter approaching our main apiary tasks for today were to prepare the hives so that they will survive over Winter and be ready to thrive when Spring arrives in September. We needed to make sure that hives had sufficient stores of honey and that they did not contain any empty boxes. Most of the hives will be kept in two boxes- a brood box below and a honey box above separated by a queen excluder. This arrangement is convenient when the Demaree method of swarm control is performed in early spring.
