Skiing Kelso Mtn

May powder face shots!

Lower down on the run

We skied the north couloir/gully on Kelso mountain on Saturday May 10th.

ABasin reported 6" of new snow this day, and the temperatures did not seem to go above freezing the whole day.

We could only drive to 9800' on the Grizzly Gulch road before reaching snow. From the snow it was possible to skin up to the base of the route at 10800'. From the base of the gully the route was fairly consistent and up to the summit at 13100'.

Snow conditions varied from powder to breakable crust formed by wind. Generally the day felt more like mid-to-late March rather than May.

Ironically the season for skiing Kelso is listed as "May" in the guidebook, but we found no corn snow on this brisk day.
