Photographic Plagiarism,

Watermarks SUCK! But because people WILL take our photos and use them as they choose, we are forced to protect ourselves and those whom we photograph

Well Nicole it just happened to me and with the picture above. I posted it back in February and I was FLOORED when I saw it in someone's profile on another site as if it was one of their own photos. It wasn't saved as a "Favorite," with the credit given to the photographer. But instead, it was posted alongside photos of  themself as one of their own. When I emailed them about it, they did remove it, but claimed to be a semi-professional photographer and that they were only showing my photo as a compliment to me. Funny thing was, the only photo that wasn't a self-portrait was the one above and there was no mention of were they snagged it from or who the photographer was.

So everyone, until photoblog does something to protect our photos. This may well be my final public posting. In the future I will only post photos so that my current "Friends" will be able to see them or with an ugly watermark in the center of it.I will also be going back and deleting any previous posts of mine that did not have a Watermark and in the future if I find any of my posted pictures (Watermarked or not) from this site used elsewhere, then I will be deleting ALL of my previous posts.

If someone will even subtly claim this fairly insignifcant photo as their own, then imagine how many  people are doing that with a lot of finer photographs and I would strongly advise everyone to guard and protect your artistic and legal rights. Because like it or not, people ARE taking our photos off this site and using them in any way that they choose.

So, internet photograher, BEWARE!!

ncshutterbug That's horrible. How did you find out about it?
ncshutterbug · 2008-04-10: 18:35
cobaltbutterfly I'm sorry that happened. It's too bad people have to "use" someone else's work!
cobaltbutterfly · 2008-04-10: 20:29
LotoFoto Oh wow. My worst fear is that this happens w/photos of my kids. Sorry this happened to you. I am curious how you found out. It is such a beautiful photo.

stormfish i agree with sjasf. watermarking or hiding away your really nice pictures is no solution. if you can shame the guy who uses your feathers for his fancy hat and look at it as an indirect compliment that your picture(s) are actually worth stealing.

photoblog is deliberately NOT a site to be used as your protective picture storage or portfolio system - there is other websites out there for this purpose. whatever you post here... you SHARE - to be used and, unfortunately, also to be misused.

don't let the bad guys keep you from being a good guy! ;-)

Orhidea46 awsome colors, great job

joycephotography I am with you, we need to have it so people can't right click on our images. My web host offers this and I can control if I want it on/off.

jenjung wow - i remember reading someone's comment about how they were getting too comfortable on photoblog and i feel the same way now.

I'm sorry that happened to you and it definitely makes me think twice now about what I post - not that i think my pictures are great but I was thinking about posting pictures of when i was a kid or my cousin's cute little daughter but now i feel kind of weird about doing it.
jenjung · 2008-04-11: 18:53
ScubaLiz Wow, that's awful! It's wrong on so many levels, but how pathetic to want to pass someone else's work off as your own - I just don't understand that. I hope you don't stop posting - I really enjoy your photos. If I have to enjoy them with a big watermark in the center, so be it. Anyway, it really is a fabulous shot!
ScubaLiz · 2008-04-11: 19:26
lmruppert I agree with ScubaLiz. I would rather see the watermark than not be able to enjoy your work. : (

mariaps This is terrible. I had no idea this was happening. It puts a little damper on what I have come to consider such an enjoyable site.
mariaps · 2008-04-11: 20:08
Frenchies I feel sorry for you my friend !!!!
Frenchies · 2008-04-11: 21:30
coyoteself Nothing to feel sorry about. But it is something to think about, because it is happening, or will happen to all of us here at one point or another. But the odds are that most people may never find out about for awhile. I only found out by pure dumb luck and believe me it is a shock to see someone on another site using your photo as one of their own.
coyoteself · 2008-04-11: 23:27
focussed i also meandered along thinking "no one would ever want to use one of my photos"...wow..this really got me thinking about things..........so sorry it had to happen to you, i can only image what a shock it must have been.....it IS a damn good photo though ;)

moonofthewild Its an amazing photo! Sorry about it being stolen.
moonofthewild · 2008-04-17: 14:07
ClaudePechabaden It's a pretty picture, I understand your problem about the watermarks!
Perrsonally, I don't care whether they take my pictures or not; why would it matter?
My own pictures are crappy anyway, and the pictures of me in it which are taken by a friend and are good are all over the internet already...But thanks for your concern. Good luck. I think sharing is nice!
