Sculpture At Risk

2008.04.24
This sculpture was created as a middle school project in the mid-80s. It is now registered with the Smithsonian Institute. Even while undergoing repair, the sculpture is at risk, now that the fire department wants the land it sits on for a new station. The latest word is that friends of the sculpture have until July 1 to relocate it or it will be torn down to make way for the fire station. Unfortunately, the unofficial estimate is that relocation costs will run into six figures.

Lots of children's literature imagery

The White Rabbit and the Mad Hatter

A more obscure reference, at least to me

As Bruce Springsteen sang, "you can look, but you better not touch."

Fleur-de-lis or ears of corn...I'm not sure.

Stonehengian in some views

View from the south, with repair work not much in evidence. Is that Daedelus or Icarus?

Compendium of storybook references. It might help to expand this one.

Likewise. There are quite a few owls on this panel.

And again

Tools of the bricklayer

Shades of Easter Island

The upside down shield looks quite medieval.

Evidence of recent repair

A turret of some kind?

See for yourself at Claycut and Jefferson in Baton Rouge--for a limited time!

Westdale Middle, creator of the Westdale Sculpture, sits behind its protecting oak.

The valued land

Now the bricks lay on Grand Street
Where the neon madmen climb.
They all fall there so perfectly,
It all seems so well timed.
An' here I sit so patiently
Waiting to find out what price
You have to pay to get out of
Going through all these things twice.
Oh, Mama, can this really be the end,
To be stuck inside of Mobile
With the Memphis blues again.

moonofthewild What incredible work these kids put into this display. Nice pics of it too. At least you can preserve it in pictures. So sad that it isn't valued for what it is, and the idea of art in school on this kind of scale isn't spreading widely. Pity...
