Music Springs

The first bluegrass band plays to the crowd

A world of roots music album covers

This giant gazebo provided lots of welcome shade.

The banjo is at the root of bluegrass music.

Fashion and comfort on the North Shore

The second bluegrass band played a Dylan tune.

I finally learned the real name of this...I always called it a chest protector from baseball lingo.

Rub board in use by the Louisiana Sunspots, a zydeco band. Did you know that zydeco is fractured French for "the beans have no salt"?

Dancing With the Stars has nothing on this couple.

This is Bruce "Sunpie" Barnes, leader of the Sunpie Barnes and the Louisiana Sunspots. Sunpie brings a little French, a little English, a lot of accordion, and a lot of enthusiasm (and often a black top hat, but not today) to his shows. The bass player is Michael. It was both his and Sunpie's birthday.

No blues today, but you still gotta' love 'em.

Mr. Ellis (I forget his first name) could really blow this sax.

The Trail Head Museum hosted the Roots Music exhibit from the Smithsonian. A bike trail runs thru Abita Springs and other towns in St. Tammany Parish, Louisiana. The so-called "piney woods" are among the most picturesque places in the state.

Zydeco really brought out the dancers.

A brief history of country music. That's Hank Williams at the lower left.

"We and our shadows"

Historical look at Abita Springs

Bucolic shot from the gazebo except for those wires running through the middle

Small town grocery holding the fort against Super Wal-Mart

Picture perfect sky on this day

Goodbye for now, Abita Springs, LA...thanks for an afternoon well spent.

I wanna ride in
The car Hank died in
I wanna stretch out in the back
Of that big old Cadillac
Ride that shiny car
To every honky tonk and bar.

Looking for the Abita Brew Pub, we took a Sunday afternoon drive to Abita Springs, LA, about an hour from Baton Rouge, and to our delight found an outdoor bluegrass and zydeco concert underway. Here's a lot of shots of the concert (and a nearby museum exhibit on roots music) and none of the brew pub, though we did find it and enjoyed some very tasty beer.
