Land of the Free - Day Thirteen

2008.06.19
Kallie got up early to play with the puppy.

Running in the backyard

Soldiers' hut at Valley Forge

Near-luxury accomodations - twelve to a room

And quality construction

We didn't know this covered bridge was nearby.

Defending the park

Split rail fence near Washington's headquarters

Washington rented this house as his headquarters for the winter encampment of 1777-78, which ended 230 years ago today on June 19, 1778.

Side view

Looking through the faux antique window glass

Inside General Washington's headquarters -- all period furnishings...nothing original

Original glass, or so the guide speculates.

George Washington used this handrail.

Serpentine construction is everywhere in SE Pennsylvania

Frisbee in the parking lot

Throwing form - she's a dancer!

Independence Hall. We arrived too late in the day to get a ticket.

Story of the Liberty Bell - Lesson One - Never Touch The Bell!

Known originally as the State House Bell, the Liberty Bell has represented freedom for more than 200 years.

The crack eventually silenced the bell in 1846.

Historical background

The words come from Leviticus--no explanation given--possibly an antislavery message as early as 1753.

Obligatory floral macro

New Liberty Bell building

Statue of George Washington

Independence Hall cupola

Weak with hunger

Ales of the Revolution were the best!

Zimmermans and Lathams (photo credit to Erin)

After playing with puppy (now known unofficially as Muppet) awhile this morning, we went to downtown Philadelphia to visit the historical sites and eat lunch at City Tavern. Along the way we drove through Valley Forge National Historical Park.
