Former Orangeburger Goes Home - Day 37

2008.07.13
pixel
Goodbye to Holiday South, a step up from Vacation Lodge based on its superior location, but still a bit of a fleabag.
pixel
Kallie drove through 40 miles of rural SC and was passed by 23 cars hurrying home from church to lunch.
pixel
Pine trees are everywhere on the South Carolina coastal plain.
pixel
Now we're in Orangeburg. In the late '70s, I lived in two rooms on the second floor of this big house.
pixel
Albemarle's (then Ethyl's) office is shaded by beautiful pecan trees.
pixel
One of the chemical plants at Albemarle's facility in Orangeburg.
pixel
I used to pick up lunch from this restaurant and carry it back to the plant for the lunchtime bridge game. The junkpile is a more recent addition.
pixel
If you enlarge this you can see that we're at the corner of Stonewall Jackson and John C. Calhoun, two favorite sons of the South.
pixel
What looks like a few trees was the ninth fairway of our backyard Frisbee golf course in the '80s.
pixel
Here's the first fairway.
pixel
I lived in this small row house from 1980-87. It has changed not at all, except that the tree in the median has gotten bigger.
pixel
In 1983, our company softball team won the Orangeburg "B" League championship at this field.
pixel
We met Kem, one of my softball, Frisbee and drinking buddies from Orangeburg days.
pixel
We made it to downtown Savannah after sunset. Here's the Talmadge bridge over the Savannah River.
pixel
The Savannah riverwalk has an eclectic collection of restaurants and shops.
pixel
This bluesman let me sing a couple songs with him.

We drove from Myrtle Beach to Savannah via the small South Carolina town of Orangeburg, where I lived and worked during most of the '80s.
