Belgium: Brussels

2009.08.28
Brussels is by some considered to be a sort of capitol of Europe with official European Union buildings and proceedings common in the city.

Atomium, a giant display built for the '58 World Fair held in Brussels, still stands and has a high viewing deck in the top sphere. It is now an unusual landmark for the city.

"Manneken Pis," a unique fountain to Brussels is a main tourist attraction and now city landmark. No one knows the exact origins.

The Grand Place, the main square in the city with fancy 300 year old buildings all around. We ate just off the square on a side street: mussels with "French" fries (originally Belgian) and rabbit's leg.

After dinner, we had Belgian Waffles, larger, more moist and better than the American interpretation, and with many toppings to choose from.

Brussels: an afternoon stop before Amsterdam.
