Lesson Learned: Music and memories are two things that can allow us to detach from the world to rest our mind, soul and body - together they are potent medicine!

* In the midst of the hub-bub of center city hayhem, there he sat playing "Those Were The Days". He sat proudly with almost a look of arrogance. Nothing could catch his attention, not even the whirling and prancing of a sweet little girl dancing to a beautiful song that I am sure she was hearing for the first time. I am certain that he was in another world, alone with his music - and memories!

Those Were The Days

Once upon a time there was a tavern
Where we used to raise a glass or two
Remember how we laughed away the hours
And dreamed of all the great things we would do

Those were the days my friend
We thought they'd never end
We'd sing and dance forever and a day
We'd live the life we choose
We'd fight and never lose
For we were young and sure to have our way.
La la la la...
Those were the days, oh yes those were the days

Then the busy years went rushing by us
We lost our starry notions on the way
If by chance I'd see you in the tavern
We'd smile at one another and we'd say

Those were the days my friend
We thought they'd never end
We'd sing and dance forever and a day
We'd live the life we choose
We'd fight and never lose
For we were young and sure to have our way.
La la la la...
Those were the days, oh yes those were the days

Just tonight I stood before the tavern
Nothing seemed the way it used to be
In the glass I saw a strange reflection
Was that lonely woman really me

Those were the days my friend
We thought they'd never end
We'd sing and dance forever and a day
We'd live the life we choose
We'd fight and never lose
For we were young and sure to have our way.
La la la la...
Those were the days, oh yes those were the days

Through the door there came familiar laughter
I saw your face and heard you call my name
Oh my friend we're older but no wiser
For in our hearts the dreams are still the same

Those were the days my friend
We thought they'd never end
We'd sing and dance forever and a day
We'd live the life we choose
We'd fight and never lose
For we were young and sure to have our way.
La la la la...
Those were the days, oh yes, those were the day

"Those Were the Days" is a song credited to Gene Raskin, who put English lyrics to the Russian song "Dorogoi dlinnoyu" ("Дорогой длинною", lit. "By the long road"), written by Boris Fomin (1900–1948) with words by the poet Konstantin Podrevskii. It deals with reminiscence upon youth and romantic idealism. The Georgian Tamara Tsereteli (1900–1968) in 1925[1] and Alexander Vertinsky in 1926[2] made what were probably the earliest recordings of the song. However, it is best remembered for Mary Hopkin's 1968 recording, which was a top-ten hit in both the U.S. and the U.K. On most records of the song, Gene Raskin is credited as the writer of the song, even though he just wrote the English lyrics and not the melody.

Annbramwell Oh to be young again and have no inhibitions and to be able to get away with it, I am sure if I tried dancing with such abandon the men in white coats would bundle me away... she is adorable, I love this song and I would have loved to have heard it played by this man... I have said it before, you just can't beat live music... Excellent set Dan, I have throughly enjoyed the music and memories it has evoked in me...

trippindelight You do find and capture the most interesting scenes. That you were there in the moment the little girl was dancing is quite serendipitous..it added a layer of extra depth to this great set.

lookagain The words of the song go wonderfully with the photos, Dan! Lovely and creative way to post this sequence of great shots (the little girl is adorable). I'm looking for a hat or can for collections as all the street musicians have around here....did you pay him for his song and the pictures?
lookagain · 2011-08-24: 15:00
DancingDolphin Terrific set, Dan. First thing I thought was how great his shirt color looked with this instrument! JR always says he wishes he could play the accordion... it seems an unusual choice to me!
DancingDolphin · 2011-08-24: 16:44

liveandletlive Excellent post Dan! Love it.
Lesson 2: Music and the memories attached to it can also rip ones heart out and throw it on the ground.
(I'm pretty careful about what I listen to)

karmankwarner What a wonderful post my friend. His face is so focused, as if he is watching someone dance that may not be there. Love the captures of the little girl; her joy shows in your photographs. Nicely Done.

????? Well, 4 is my fav, and also the wonderful last portrait! It's a wonderful set Dan, and I agree with the others. Of course, I DO see the accordion often, played by another old gent, on the "walking street" in our town, singing the same tune in Russian, as the words go through my head in English! Of course, if he sees anyone going by wearing a kipa, he quickly switches to "Hava Nagila," in the hopes of a donation...
