"El procurador general de la Nación, Edgardo José Maya Villazón, dijo que en el más reciente estudio sobre agua potable y saneamiento básico, 20 mil niños murieron por consumir agua contaminada. Explicó que varias de estas muertes pudieron ser evitadas si se hubiera cumplido con los derechos a la salud y se hubiera prestado la atención debida a la mortalidad infantil. Agregó que la situación puede ser más complicada ya que en la actualidad 13 millones de colombianos no tienen acceso al agua potable.

Así mismo, Maya Villazón dijo que en la región pacífica niños entre los 3 a 5 años no tienen acceso a la educación, sobre todo en la primera etapa donde inicia su formación.

Este panorama lo entregó el procurador en desarrollo del encuentro con los 32 jefes de planeación del país, a los cuales llamó la atención para que tomen determinaciones inmediatas y apropien los recursos necesarios para brindar una atención oportuna a los niños, niñas y adolescentes.

Finalmente advirtió que vigilará la inversión de 4 billones de pesos que dejaron los salientes gobernadores y alcaldes e inspeccionará, a partir del primero de julio, los planes de desarrollo de los entrantes funcionarios para verificar si se cumplió con la destinación de dineros para la infancia."
