Colombia's most famous hostage, former presidential candidate Ingrid Betancourt, turned 46 on Tuesday, with her family worrying for her health as she marked her sixth birthday as a hostage in a rebel jungle camp.

But some had cause for hope as they await word of three hostages the rebels have promised to release to Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez. Last week, the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia, or FARC, said it would hand over Betancourt's vice-presidential running mate, Clara Rojas, Rojas' young son, Emmanuel, and a former congresswoman, Consuelo Gonzalez.

Lecompte spent much of the last week throwing about 22,000 leaflets from a small plane over the jungles of southeastern Colombia, one of the zones Betancourt is thought to be. The leaflets were adorned with pictures of Betancourt's two children. Lecompte hopes that the guerrillas will pass the flyer on to her, thus fortifying her spirits on her birthday.

France Renews Contact With Colombian Rebels - Sarkozy Aide
PARIS (AFP)--France has renewed contacts with Colombian FARC rebels holding ex-presidential candidate Ingrid Betancourt after several weeks of silence, an aide to President Nicolas Sarkozy said Thursday.
"All indications are that she is alive," said the official.
Sarkozy is seeking to win the release of Betancourt, a French-Colombian national who was seized by rebels of the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia, or FARC, six years ago while campaigning for the Colombian presidency.
"Her health condition is bad, but not critical," he said. "I say this with extreme caution because this information has not been corroborated and comes to us from a fairly indirect source."
The most recent photographs of Betancourt showed her looking pale and gaunt.
Foreign Minister Bernard Kouchner said last month the death of FARC leader Manuel Marulanda in March raised much hope for the release of Betancourt, the most high-profile of the 750 FARC hostages.
"We have increased our efforts to renew dialogue with the new FARC leadership, " said the official. "We have succeeded, we think, in renewing a dialogue with some members of the FARC secretariat."
