I started early, took my dog,
And visited the sea;
The mermaids in the basement
Came out to look at me,

And frigates in the upper floor
Extended hempen hands,
Presuming me to be a mouse
Aground, upon the sands.

But no man moved me till the tide
Went past my simple shoe,
And past my apron and my belt,
And past my bodice too,

And made as he would eat me up
As wholly as a dew
Upon a dandelion’s sleeve—

I felt his silver heel

Me fui temprano -me llevé a mi perro-
a visitar el mar.
Las sirenas del sótano
salían a mirarme

y, en el piso de arriba, las fragatas
extendían manos de cáñamo,
creyéndome una rata
encallada en la arena.

No huí, con todo. Hasta que el flujo
me llegó a los zapatos
y al delantal y al cinturón
y enseguida al corpiño,

tal como si intentara devorarme
como a una gota de rocío
en una flor de diente-de-león.
Entonces salí huyendo.

Él me siguió. Venía detrás, cerca.
Sentía su tacón de plata
en mi tobillo y mis zapatos
rebosaron de perlas.

Los dos llegamos hasta el pueblo firme.
No parecía conocer a nadie.
