Holbein in Soho

2007.07.25
Art for art's sake....

Please enlarge.

The National Gallery has produced a set of replica paintings of some of the most famous works of art in its collection and hung them on walls in backstreets all over central London.

I think this is such a cool idea - and the gallery have called it "The Grand Tour".

This is Holbein's "The Ambassadors" from 1533, now hanging on the side of a derelict shop in Berwick Street in Soho - and I managed to get another work of art strolling past.

Art for the people!

longimanus That guy with the dog would perfectly fit between the two ambassadors! And I am sure he really appreciates the "Grand Tour". Cool capture! (it is an animal, the feather star)

SuperG What I have always loved about this painting is the strange disc cruising at their feet and every item points to their social positions and their livelihood. Just like this photo! The composition here is excellent and I like seeing just the tail.
