The Grand Old Duke of York

2008.02.28

Continuing my black and white London week.

This column, on The Mall, was built in 1833 in honour of Frederick, second son of George III - the Grand of Duke of York of nursery rhyme fame.

During the Napoleonic wars he was made commander in chief of the British Army but the column was paid for by stopping a day's wages from every soldier in the army - I bet they didn't think he was very "grand" after that!
