Fez, in northern Morocco, was founded in the 8th century and is one of the four so-called "imperial" cities.

The claustrophobic alleyways of the souks in the old medina are an almost overwhelming assault on the senses with the sights, sounds, smells completely different from any northern European experience. And among this confusing warren you stumble on magnificent gems of Islamic architecture.
