Lessons in Mortality

Highgate Cemetery is only 4 miles from where I live but I had never been there until the other day. It's a fascinating, eerie confusion of trees and graves - famous of course for being the place where Karl Marx is buried.

However, as I walked around it became powerfully obvious to me just what transient interlopers we all are in this world which we vainly try to control and mould to our desires. What staggering arrogance and ignorance we combine to such ultimately little effect as mother nature, in time, takes back what is hers.

Some may think that the unkempt, overgrown and chaotic tangle is a dereliction of duty or even a kind of desecration but to me it seems just starkly fitting. Earth to earth, no less.

cariad These are great - and one of those times when both b/w and colour capture the moment - well done :)

burbulz I live near a cemetery. It's just few graves in forest.
Sometimes I "take my soul for a walk" - it's a great place to be alone with your thoughts.

????? Very moving and telling. Good going. I like the Sepia one the best. It fits the mood of nostalgia.
