Culloden Moor

2008.07.01

Road trip - Day 8 - from Ullapool to Pitlochry

I had to go on a rather extensive detour right across from west coast to east to pass through Tain as this is where the famous 16 Men of Tain hail from.... otherwise known as the original distillers of Glenmorangie. It drew me like a magnet... honestly :)

But I also stopped off at Culloden, the site of the last pitched battle on British soil on 16th April 1746.

A Government army under the command of the Duke of Cumberland defeated the Highland Army of Charles Stuart (Bonnie Prince Charlie) - the picture is of the monument to the fallen highland troops.

I want to say that if you get the chance to go to this place it's a MUST because the museum is excellent and the audio-guide to the battle field is driven by GPS coordinates so that when you walk around the system knows where you are and provides the appropriate commentary - brilliant use of technology.
