...that we completely missed this guy jump up from the reeds on the bank next to us and launch into the river just a few metres in front of us! Close call, but all's well that ends well :)

We went for a canoe trip along stretch of the Okavango river. It was easy to forget the realities of the world, just drifting along with the sights and sounds of the river gliding past but I talked to the guide and he explained how crocs had taken 6 women and children along that stretch of river in the last year. But the river is everything to them - their view is that it's their life but if it's time for them to go then so be it.

The Hippo is considered the most dangerous animal in Africa
and yes we do get complacent around wild animals

Fascinating set!! Everything from the beautiful dawn, to the very cool bats, AND the reality of the river. I'm surprised from what I've heard of hippos that people get so close to them! I've also heard stories of the crocs... I don't think I could be so casual about them!
