The past reflected in the present...

2008.12.15

This is a picture from a couple of years ago but I just fancied a splash of colour today - by the way, feel free to guess where but Longimanus isn't allowed to answer. :)

However, it got me thinking. People are always banging on about "things aren't as good as they used to be" and harking back to the "good old days"...

I'd rather deal with the present and look forward to the future. While I love history and am fascinated by it and the lessons which can be learnt from it, I don't want to live in the past and I don't waste my time wishing for bygone days viewed through rose-tinted spectacles.

And let's face it, what was so great about the past anyway? World Wars, genocide, oppression, institutionalised racism and bigotry, disease, disenfranchised populace.... actually it ain't so different from now so why don't we just get on with stuff?

Or, as Redro has posted yesterday... "Fuck the Past"!

makaid Nice shot. Great words. Unfortunately, as you said, our past is reflected in our present. The problem is, the atrocities that occurred in the past reoccur in different form.

DancingDolphin Really nice shot.

I think those who spend too much time looking back must have had a better past than mine! Bring on the future! :)

redro Dave, I love fiercely your picture ( Hungary ?) and your commentary.
You just made my To-day.Thanks.

The Yesterday is past,Tomorrow may never come, Today is a gift ...that's why is called Present.
I would rather live in the present no matter how it is, at least it's real.
The only time we live is right NOW, this moment.

Lost Horizon ( Shawn Phillips )
Have you ever dreamed of a place far away from it all?
Where the air you breathe is soft and clean,
and children play in fields of green,
and the sound of guns
doesn't pound in your ears.
Have you ever dreamed of a place far away from it all?
Where the winter winds will never blow,
and living things have room to grow,
and the sound of guns
doesn't pound in your ears, anymore.
Many miles from yesterday,
before you reach tomorrow,
where the time is always just today,
there's a Lost Horizon,
waiting to be found.
There's a Lost Horizon
where the sound of guns
doesn't pound in your ears, anymore.

longimanus Haha... I swear I havent read your comment yet when I recognized it already! Ok, wont say where it is, only that the present is the Hilton Hotel - hope you wont bite me for this :-) Oh, you made my heart beat faster... just a couple of months and back home again:-) This is a brilliant combination of title and content and message - not just because where it is - and right, fuck the past!

firehorsecri Great reflection and colours! Well, not all the modern buildings are fit to stay so close to the past ones... I don't know Budapest, so I can't say, but I saw real architectural atrocities in France, Italy and other EEC countries :-(
