A worthy bequest...

2009.01.17

This is the Geffrye Museum in Shoreditch. The museum is set in 18th century almshouses, today Grade 1 listed buildings. Built in 1714 by the Ironmongers' Company with a bequest from Sir Robert Geffrye, twice Master of the Company and former Lord Mayor of London, the almshouses provided shelter for around fifty pensioners for almost two hundred years.

Now the museum shows the changing style of the English domestic interior in a series of period rooms from 1600 to the present day.

Well worth a visit... and it's free.

You know, I think I should get a commission from the London Tourist Board :)

DancingDolphin Nice the way the light reflects on the left side and bottom of the windows.

Some time back we were given the wayfarers dole (I believe I have the wording right?) at St. Cross Almshouse in Winchester. Always interesting to take part in a tradition dating back hundreds of years.

burbulz nice building, I'd like to see what's inside.
although your pictures are so real that I'm afraid I'll have a feeling that I experienced it before. that's why I think you should compensate losses for London Tourist Board, as everyone who constantly visits your blog will think twice before buying a ticket to London - being afraid of déjà vu effect.
