Cats, ice cream and a big hole in the ground...

2009.01.21

This is Gatti Wharf, named after Carlo Gatti (cats) an Italian-speaking Swiss who moved to London in the 1840s.

He is credited as being the first to import ice into England - brought across the North Sea from Norway and stored on this site, beside the wharf, in 13m deep chambers dug into the ground known as "ice wells". Following the success of his enterprise he is also thought to be one of the first entrepreneurs in England to have sold ice cream to the public in the 1850s.

Have a guess whether or not it was a success.

redro Strange place, it looks like an enclosure, but it must have some exit connection with the outside...Do they make it into a skating rink when it freezes in winter ?
I thought at first: why did he bring ice from Norway when he could have made it in a freezer...Duh, ...1870 ! And I'm sure the solid ice cream was a huge success !
I'm glad to hear that I'm not the only one seeing colours in your b&w pics ...I was starting to suspect that it was coming from a brain freeze - eating too much ice cream ;)

burbulz what an ambiguity. I'm attracted to boats and slightly repelled by ice cream.
