One for my Canadian friends...

2009.02.20

This is the "Brooding Soldier" and I think it is the most moving, dignified memorial on the Western Front. It is located in the village of St. Juliaan near Ypres where the locals have changed the name of the spot to "Vancouver Corner".

The Brooding Soldier memorial is a 35ft-high statue of a Canadian soldier with bowed head and hands resting on arms reversed. The memorial was designed by Chapman Clemesha, carved from a single shaft of granite and unveiled on July 8 1923.

It was special to see it on such a glorious, frosty morning.

The plaque explains what it commemorates - my words are just superfluous.

Have a good weekend all.

D.
