You will know if you have seen any of my posts that I am interested in architecture both old and new. But I don't just hark back to the "good old days" - some of my favourite buildings are ultra-modern such as 20, St Mary Ax (the Gherkin) in London or the Casa da Musica in Porto.

So when I went to Bruges last week I was interested to see the Concertgebouw - Bruges' concert hall, designed by architects Paul Robbrecht and Hilde Daem, and opened in February 2002 as part of the city's European City of Culture celebrations. As a music venue it is equipped with state-of-the-art technology making for excellent acoustics.

But, you know, I'm not sure I like it. It's interesting but it just doesn't move me.

What do you think?

I'm all for modern architecture but I'm afraid it just looks like a modern office block to me. As a musician I'd be more interested in the acoustics inside! girafferacing · 2009-02-23: 16:09

I reserve total judgement until seeing the entirety within it's setting... but from what you've shown, I'm think.... yuck! Especially the second view... tiny, uninteresting windows randomly placed on a flat facade. And WHAT is behind the vertical parts in the first shot (eyebrows are knitted together as I ask). Culture now is "manufactured" for mass consumption and a captive audience. No wonder then that some venues sometimes look like warehouses and prisons. But I agree with both Hobbes' comments. odradek · 2009-02-24: 09:26
