New adventures in concrete...

2009.03.30

This is the Royal National Theatre in the Southbank Centre, designed by Sir Denys Lasdun. It is perhaps the most controversial building in London in the last 50 years. When it opened in 1976 opinion was massively divided and remains so today about the building.

Some cite it as an architype of the brutalist movement - others claim it to be the obvious successor of Le Corbusier. Prince Charles was once quoted as saying that it was "a clever way of building a nuclear power station in the middle of London without anyone objecting"!!

For what it's worth I really like it - even the fact that inside the walls are just the same... bare concrete. You can't say he didn't go through with his idea :-)

girafferacing Nice set. I must admit the South Bank Centre's not my cup of tea but it makes a striking photo - especially no.1. I like the solitary splash of colour in no.4 too.

DancingDolphin The building leaves me cold... but your first photo is a nice mix of sun & shadows, and of course the clouds.
