An unusual architectural challenge...

2009.05.26

...how to build a modern art gallery on top of the remains of a ruined fortress?

The answer - the MUDAM in Luxembourg, or to give it its more grandiose title, Musée d'art Moderne Grand-Duc Jean. Designed by I.M.Pei and opened in 2006.

redro Very ugly !...Just kidding.
I will tell you why I like it, ... and it's not because you told me that you like it :)...
I think it was a great challenge but the new building works well with the old part - at least for me...
I like the way the gray new wall is matching the old stone wall, as texture and a bit massive shape...I think it's a smart transition to the modern part. And I like the angularity of the glass building in contrast with the roundness of the old one. And I love that it's all clear blue glass and it reflects the sky...
The old one is earthy, solid planted on the ground, the new one is airy melting into the clouds.
You had a challenge too about the composition of your pics - and you did very well .
The vertical one - oh, a VERTICAL one ?! ;) - is well balanced with the undulating short wall and so more interesting than without it.

DancingDolphin Well... I must admit to not liking the new part of the building, but I think the second shot does a nice job of capturing the place!

sunshineand that fortress is very cool ...and the museum must get some wonderful light inside with all those windows.

Widcat I like the idea of including the old with the new if the old is saved and preserved. I like the "sky" color of the modern building. I like the second photo because of the inclusion of the wall.

slowpete i like #2 . good contrast

busybee36 Not sure what Kevin McCloud would have to say but in my humble opinion because the two buildings are so different they both illustrate the era in which they were built. I like the new building, especially in no 3.

jet28 How unusual - there's something discordant about the combination.

Unchained I like it! I think it is a very audacious but well achieved project. The pictures are very good, with different angles, enhancing alternatively the old and modern.
