Winter Solstice 冬至

2007.12.22
Adding some hot water

Mix it up

Add a little bit more

The reason that hot water is being added bit by bit is to prevent the dough to become too sticky

Chatting and working

Get a pinch of dough

Roll to form a "snowball"

A faster way to produce tang yuan without rolling it

Boiling it

The leaves on the plate is pandan leaves, which has a very sweet fragrance

Some sweet potatoes for extra taste

Mother and daughter...

The end result

Feasting time!

It's called 冬至 (dong zhi) in Mandarine, means the beginning of the winter. Besides that it's also one of the festival that Chinese celebrate, where family members having family gathering together. on this particular day there is a cuisine not to be missed, which is 汤圆 (tang yuan) or "Snow Ball". It is made of rice flour, formed into a dough then boil in the water together with sugar and pandan leaf.

For today's post I'm presenting the photos that I've taken at my grandmother's house. Me and my mom drove for more than 30 km to her place at Siburan, Kuching. Apart from visiting her, my mom also planned to produce tang yuan together with my grandmother. So you may see the processes through the photographs.

Happy Winter Solstice everyone!
&
Happy viewing too!

JuliaGotz this is what I love about photoblog - a chance to experience the human world through one other person's eyes. You brought us into your family. These photos are beautiful. They bring back memories of my own grandmother making foods in a different tradition - the expertise in the old hands.

Snowballs - this is delightful.
