This is a Mimosa Tree, in the spring they have a beautiful pink fluffy flower. As these seed pods turn brown they will get a little bug in them. You can pop them open and see the little bugs. It looks like one little bug has started eating into the pod. I have a beautiful one (Tree) in my back yard.
